NEWS ALERT

Do you want to hunt ducks this year?

Conservation Hunting to assist rice farmers.

Over the past two years NSW and inland Australia have been experiencing significant rainfall. As a result of this, ducks have been breeding up over the past 18 months.

The rainfall has also meant that this year there will be significant areas of rice grown in southern NSW.

Holders of NSW Game Hunting Licences can participate in the NSW Game Bird Management Program and assist farmers by controlling ducks that have the potential to ruin crops

by eating the freshly planted seed, young emerging plants and later, the mature crop.

Will I be able to utilise the ducks harvested under this program?

Yes, although the program is a mitigation program, hunters must hunt ethically and legally. Hunters & Fishermen's Association of NSW (Artemis) and

Game Council also encourages all hunters involved to remove and utilise the ducks shot taken in the program, either themselves or by giving them to friends so that they can enjoy and share in the wild harvest.

How do I get involved?

Under NSW law, hunters must hold two licences before assisting rice growers to control ducks: A NSW Game Hunting Licence (General or Restricted) from Game Council NSW;

and a General Licence (Game Birds) from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

You must also successfully pass the Waterfowl Identification Test (WIT), administered by the NPWS.

For further information about the NPWS-issued General Licence (Game Birds) or Waterfowl Identification Test in NSW, please contact the NPWS Griffith office on (02) 6966 8109 or for Victorian residents; the Department of Sustainability & Environment on 136 186.

Enclosed with this letter are; an information brochure and application for a NSW Game Hunting Licence from the Game Council and an application for the NPWS General Licence (Game Birds).

The NPWS licence is free once you have a current NSW Game Hunting Licence issued by the Game Council of NSW

Once you have the required licences contact Game Council at Tocumwal (03 5874 2983) for information on where and which farmers require assistance, hunters will especially be needed for mid-week to control ducks on the rice.
